PROJECTS
FREE ROAMING BUSHBUCK STUDIES
The bushbuck of Brenton-on-Sea are a free roaming
population. Despite their extensive interaction with the local
community, very little is known about the population, including
size, health, and behaviour.
This project aims to contribute to the data gap by conducting
a population as well as assessing various infraspecific behaviour
including mating, group, sex, and ewe-offspring behaviour.
As more is understood about the population, the project will
expand to assess human-wildlife conflict and various conflict
mitigation methods.
SOUTHERN AFRICAN BIRD ATLAS PROJECTS 2 / BIRDLASSER SOUTH AFRICA
SABAP2 is a citizen science project that is driven by the energy of several hundred volunteers who are mapping the distribution of birds across several southern African countries. The project aims to map the distribution and relative abundance of birds in southern Africa.
To gather data, volunteers select a geographical ‘pentad’ on a map and record all the bird species seen within a set time frame, in order of species seen. This information is uploaded to the SABAP2 database and is used for research and analysis by several different agencies, including the South African National Biodiversity Institute, BirdLife South Africa, as well as academics and students at various universities.
Since 2007, more than 17 million records have been collected with about 2 million more being added each year. This valuable dataset is key to determining the conservation status of bird species, correctly assigning red-list status and establishing, as well as forming the basis for informing Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).
BirdLasser makes it easy to share your observations with the relevant cause authorities – giving them a better understanding of our birds, their habitat changes and the effect on their well being.
BEACH SWEEPS AND RECYCLABLE ART PROJECT
Plastic pollution impacts many species including marine birds, fish, turtles and marine mammals.
Micro-plastics are widespread in fish, up to 80% of table salt contains micro-plastics, and micro-plastics have recently been detected in human blood for the first time.
Brenton-on-sea is no stranger to the plastic pollution crisis. Weekly beach sweeps are conducted along Brenton-on-sea to Buffels Bay.
Identify and monitor marine species found in rock pools.
Driftwood and other such items are collected for art projects, profits of are donated to our partner local school.

COMMUNITY ART AND CRAFT PROJECT
There is creativity in every one of us. Performing art is a expression of our emotions and feelings.
The Community Art And Craft Project (CAACP) aims to develop art skills in local school children and expose them to various artistic methods of creative expression.
CERAMICS SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
FUNDRAISER PROJECT
We strongly believe in bridging the gap between arts and sciences.
Studies have shown that collaboration between the two increases problem solving skills.
We are hosting in-house pottery workshops to create pieces to sell at the local Farmers Market.
All proceeds will be donated to the local school.

LOCAL SCHOOL OUTREACH PROJECTS
Inspire the next generation and invest in the future of the environment.
Our aim is to run environmental workshops at the local school.
We hope to help educate pupils on environmentalism
and the importance of protecting their local ecology.
